Why subscribe to Get Down and Shruti?
In Get Down and Shruti, I write about all things Indian political economy and culture. I have spent the last two decades studying India as a student of economics and law and thinking about various problems and puzzles posed by the Indian political economy. My goal is to provide context on various aspects of India. I lead the Indian political economy program at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and direct their Emergent Ventures moonshot grants program for India. And I host the Ideas of India podcast.
Before joining the Mercatus Center I followed the typical path of an American academic. After completing my Ph.D. in Economics at George Mason University in 2013, I started as an Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Purchase and received tenure in 2019. You can read my papers published in peer-reviewed journals, books, etc. here.
Soon after receiving tenure, I left the traditional academic path and took the opportunity to start a program on India at the Mercatus Center, where in addition to academic research and working with students, I also work on policy, write columns for a broader audience, host a podcast, and run the EV India grants program. I am also a Fellow at the Classical Liberal Institute at NYU School of Law and a Schmidt Futures Innovation Fellow and participate in various programs hosted by these wonderful institutions.
I live in northern Virginia with my husband and our two black labrador retrievers Coal and Trane. Other than thinking about all things India, I enjoy listening to jazz and classical music on vinyl.
